Vanaprerana Udyamam

By educating and inculcating environmental consciousness in children they can be motivated to become the protectors of nature and its resources in the future.

Through this program, the school children, especially in rural areas are focused, sensitized and assisted to greening the ecosystem by enhancing the green cover in degraded dry lands. By planting trees, the child will see it grow along with him/her, meet their immediate needs (for fruits or shade) at the local level, and also fulfill their global environmental responsibility.

We understand that many afforestation programmes in the past had failed because of less survival of planted saplings, hence CGR has exercised a systemic process of follow up which, resulted in the survival and sustenance of larger number of plants.

Methodology :

Each student is provided with 5 plants, where the responsibility of growing the plant (near his/her home) lies with the student. This will be a learning experience for the student as well.

The five plants comprise three fruit bearing trees, two shady trees. The future economic incentive encourages the children and elders to take up and protect the plantation.

Prior to each plantation activity, students are explained in detail in an open interactive session in the presence of their teachers, about the significance of plants to their well being, how to plant them and care for them.

Resource material for the programme is distributed in the form of pamphlets and booklets consisting information (including dos and don’ts) on trees, planting and caring techniques.

To encourage students, each student is presented a book at the end of the activity. The book contains attractive sayings and knowledge of environment, which would act as a reminder of the task he/she had performed.

The students are asked to conduct follow-up activities to see the saplings growth and also submit a report on the activity after a period of three months. All the findings are being documented.

CGR has planted 3,82,929 saplings under vanaprerana udyamam program during 2010 & 2011 involving 88,989 students belonging to 394 Govt. Schools in 4 drought prone districts of Andhra Pradesh namely Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda, Warangal and Ranga Reddy.
